Water Heater Installation in Sacramento, CA
Water heater installation is usually an urgent decision rather than a planned one, which is exactly why it goes wrong so often. A hurried swap that skips expansion control, seismic strapping, or correct venting creates problems that surface months later. American Energy Home Pros replaces tank and tankless water heaters across the greater Sacramento area, and our licensed technicians (License #1083187) install to current California code. We are open 24 hours a day.
Tank or Tankless
A conventional tank is the right answer for many Sacramento homes: lower installed cost, simple service, and adequate capacity when the tank is sized to the household. Its limits are standby loss and a finite recovery rate, so a large family with simultaneous demand runs out.
Tankless makes sense when demand is high or simultaneous, when floor space matters, or when you want a longer service life. Two local caveats matter. First, our hard water means a tankless unit needs annual descaling and, ideally, scale filtration to reach its potential lifespan. Second, tankless units often need a larger gas line and different venting than the tank they replace, so the installed cost is not simply the equipment difference. We check gas supply capacity and the venting route before quoting so the number you get is real.
Code Requirements That Get Missed
- Seismic strapping. California requires water heaters to be braced against movement, with strapping at the upper and lower thirds of the tank. This is the single most commonly missed item on homeowner and low bid installations.
- Temperature and pressure relief discharge. The relief valve needs a full size discharge line terminating in an approved location. Capping it, reducing it, or running it uphill defeats the safety device.
- Thermal expansion control. Where a pressure regulator or check valve creates a closed system, an expansion tank is required. Without it, pressure spikes on every heating cycle and the relief valve becomes the pressure release, which is how tanks fail early.
- Combustion air and venting. Gas units need adequate combustion air and a correctly sized, correctly sloped vent. In tight closets and converted spaces this is frequently inadequate.
- Drain pan and drainage. Where a failure would damage the structure, a pan with a drain to an approved point is required. On second floor and interior closet installations this is what separates an appliance replacement from a construction claim.
- Permit and inspection. We pull permits where the jurisdiction requires them, which also protects you at resale.
Signs It Is Time to Replace
- The tank itself is leaking, which is never repairable
- The unit is more than twelve years old and needs a significant repair
- Rusty hot water at first draw, indicating the lining has failed
- Hot water capacity no longer meets the household even after a flush
- Repeated repairs in the same year
- Heavy sediment that flushing no longer clears
- You are remodeling and want to reclaim the closet or garage space
- The current install is not to code and correcting it approaches replacement cost
Our Installation Process
- Assessment and sizing. We look at household demand, existing gas or electrical supply, venting route, space, and drainage before recommending equipment.
- Written price before work starts. Including any code corrections needed, so there is no mid job surprise about strapping, expansion tanks, or venting.
- Removal and haul away. The old unit is drained, disconnected, and taken with us.
- Installation to code. New unit set, connections made, relief discharge piped correctly, expansion tank installed where required, seismic straps fitted, venting verified, drain pan where applicable.
- Startup and verification. Fill and purge, leak check every joint, verify delivered temperature and recovery, confirm draft on gas units, and set the thermostat to a safe temperature.
- Walkthrough. We show you the shutoffs, explain the flushing interval, and register the manufacturer warranty.

What Sacramento Customers Say
Burst tank Thursday, new heater installed by end of day
Laura and Jeff Corbett had a water heater burst without warning, which is how most replacements begin. The sequence they describe is what we aim for on an emergency replacement: a next morning service call, a decision made with real information, and hot water restored the same day.
“We had a sudden hot water heater burst. American Energy scheduled a next morning service call and by end of day we had a new one installed. From the initial phone call and follow up call to Anthony’s professionalism we were just thrilled with the outstanding service. Anthony’s patience in answering our questions was very much appreciated.”
Laura Corbett, 5 stars, May 2026.
Why Installation Quality Matters Here
Water heaters are the appliance most likely to cause interior water damage, and the difference between a contained failure and an expensive one is usually the pan, the drain, and the pressure control. They are also a combustion appliance in many homes, which puts venting and combustion air in the same category as furnace work. California’s seismic requirements exist because an unstrapped tank can shear its gas connection during an earthquake. The Department of Energy’s guidance on selecting a new water heater is a useful primer on sizing and efficiency.

Schedule Water Heater Installation
Tell us what you have and what your household demand looks like and we will give you a real number. If the unit can be repaired economically we will say so, and water heater repair is often the better call. Hard water is the main enemy of a new heater, and if your supply piping is also aging, repiping is worth discussing at the same time.
Water Heater Installation FAQs
How quickly can you replace a failed water heater?
Often the next morning, and same day when the schedule allows. Standard tank sizes are commonly stocked.
What size water heater do I need?
It depends on household size and simultaneous demand rather than square footage. We ask how many bathrooms get used at once and size from actual usage.
Is tankless worth it in Sacramento?
It can be, especially with high or simultaneous demand. Factor in the gas line and venting changes plus annual descaling given our hard water. We will price both so the comparison is honest.
Do I need an expansion tank?
If your home has a pressure regulator or a check valve creating a closed system, yes, and it is a code requirement. Without one, every heating cycle spikes system pressure.
Is seismic strapping really required?
Yes, in California. Straps at the upper and lower thirds of the tank. We fit them on every installation.
Do you pull a permit?
Yes, where the jurisdiction requires it. It creates the inspection record that protects you later.
Can you move the water heater to a different location?
Often, though it involves gas, water, venting, and drainage changes. We will scope it and give you a real number rather than a rough guess.
Do you offer financing?
Yes, including 0 percent options for qualified customers.
