Trenchless Sewer Replacement in Sacramento, CA
Trenchless sewer replacement rebuilds a failed lateral without excavating its full length, using access pits at each end instead of an open trench. In this region that matters more than in most, because the properties with the worst sewer problems are frequently the ones where digging is hardest. American Energy Home Pros performs trenchless work across the greater Sacramento area, and our licensed technicians (License #1083187) camera and evaluate before recommending a method.
How Trenchless Works
- Pipe bursting, also called pipe splitting. A bursting head is pulled through the existing pipe, fracturing it outward into the surrounding soil while simultaneously pulling new HDPE pipe into the void behind it. The result is a new, continuous, jointless pipe. Because it is jointless, there is nothing for roots to enter.
- Cured in place pipe lining, or CIPP. A resin saturated liner is inserted into the host pipe and cured, forming a new pipe inside the old one. This requires a host pipe intact enough to support the liner and is well suited to sealing cracks and root entry points in otherwise sound pipe.
- Access points. Both methods work from a pit at each end of the run rather than a continuous trench, which is what preserves driveways, patios, mature landscaping, and tree root systems.
- Materials. HDPE and cured liners are corrosion resistant and are not subject to the joint failures that killed the clay or cast iron they replace.
When Trenchless Is the Right Method
Trenchless is strongest when the run is long, when what sits above it is expensive to restore, or when excavation itself is the hard part. In Rocklin, Loomis, and parts of Granite Bay, granite sits close to the surface and trenching through rock can cost more than the pipe work, so trenchless frequently wins outright. Under a mature oak canopy in Carmichael or Fair Oaks, trenching means cutting structural roots on trees worth more than the repair. Under a finished driveway or a hardscaped yard, the restoration is the majority of the bill.
It is not always the answer. A completely collapsed section can leave no path for the bursting head or the liner. A lateral with a significant belly needs the grade corrected, and neither method fixes fall. Multiple severe offsets can rule it out. We camera first and tell you plainly when open excavation is the correct and cheaper approach.
Signs You Need Replacement Rather Than Repair
- Camera footage shows defects along the length of the run rather than at one point
- Orangeburg pipe, which always fails and cannot be reliably repaired
- A collapsed or crushed section
- Root intrusion at multiple joints
- Heavy scale and corrosion in cast iron reducing the effective diameter
- Repeated backups despite clearing and root cutting
- Multiple offset joints from soil movement
- A lateral old enough that another spot repair is throwing money at a failing run
Our Process
- Camera inspection and locate. Full length footage, defect locating, and depth marking. You see the footage before any recommendation.
- Method selection. Bursting, lining, or open excavation, with the reasoning and the price for each option your pipe condition actually allows.
- Permits and utility locating. We pull the permit and have underground utilities marked before any digging.
- Access pits and installation. Pits excavated at each end, the new pipe pulled or the liner cured, and connections made at the house and at the main.
- Post work camera and inspection. New line filmed end to end, jurisdiction inspection before backfill, pits backfilled and the surface restored.

How We Verify the New Line
After installation we run the camera the full length of the new pipe and confirm continuous fall with no standing water, flow test at volume, and confirm the connections at both ends. You receive footage of the finished line. Where a permit applies the jurisdiction inspects before backfill, so the inspector sees the pipe rather than a restored lawn. That documentation carries real value at resale, because a buyer’s inspector will ask about the sewer.
Why Method Selection Decides the Cost
The expensive mistake in sewer replacement is choosing the method before diagnosing the pipe. Trenching a granite lot that could have been burst, or attempting to line a pipe that has already collapsed, both cost far more than doing it right the first time. Cured in place lining is a well established rehabilitation method with published standards, and the EPA’s material on sanitary sewer overflows covers why these failures matter beyond the property line.
Waiting has a compounding cost. A deteriorating lateral leaks sewage into the soil around it, and a full collapse forces an emergency excavation on whatever terms are available, rather than a planned project where you could have compared methods and pulled a permit on your own schedule.

Schedule a Trenchless Evaluation
Start with a camera inspection. If the pipe turns out to be repairable at a single point, sewer line repair is the cheaper answer and we will say so. For an active backup we can clear first with drain cleaning and evaluate afterward.
Trenchless Sewer Replacement FAQs
Is trenchless always cheaper than digging?
Not always in raw plumbing cost, but usually cheaper in total cost once you include restoring a driveway, hardscape, or mature landscaping. On granite lots it is often cheaper outright.
How long does trenchless replacement take?
Most residential laterals are completed in one to two days, compared with substantially longer for a full trench plus surface restoration.
What is the difference between pipe bursting and lining?
Bursting destroys the old pipe and pulls a new jointless pipe into place. Lining creates a new pipe inside the old one and requires the host pipe to be intact enough to support it. Bursting handles worse pipe conditions.
Will my yard be torn up?
You will have an access pit at each end of the run rather than a trench along its length. That is the entire point of the method.
How long does the new pipe last?
HDPE and cured liners are rated for long service lives well beyond the clay and cast iron they replace, and being jointless or sealed removes the root entry problem that caused the original failure.
Can trenchless fix a low spot in the line?
No. Neither method changes the grade of the run. A significant belly needs open excavation to correct the fall, and we will tell you if that is your situation.
Do you need a permit?
Yes, sewer replacement is permitted work. We handle the permit and the inspection.
Do you offer financing?
Yes, including 0 percent options for qualified customers, since sewer replacement is a significant unplanned expense for most households.
