Sewer Camera Inspection in Sacramento, CA

A sewer camera inspection turns a guess into evidence. American Energy Home Pros films the full length of your lateral, locates and marks any defect, and gives you the footage, which is exactly what you want before buying a home or authorizing a repair.

A sewer camera inspection is the cheapest way to avoid the most expensive plumbing mistake, which is authorizing excavation without knowing what is actually wrong. American Energy Home Pros performs camera inspections across the greater Sacramento area, and our licensed technicians (License #1083187) hand you the footage rather than a verbal summary.

What an Inspection Shows

  • Root intrusion. Where roots have entered a joint, how much mass is present, and which joint is the entry point. In neighborhoods with mature valley oaks this is the most common finding.
  • Bellies and standing water. A settled section holds water instead of draining. This is common in Natomas and other areas built on reclaimed ground, and it is why some lines clog repeatedly no matter how often they are cleared.
  • Offset joints and separations. Sections that have shifted out of alignment from soil movement, which catch solids and admit roots.
  • Cracks, crushing, and collapse. Structural failures that determine whether repair, lining, or replacement is appropriate.
  • Pipe material and condition. Clay, cast iron, ABS, PVC, or Orangeburg. Identifying Orangeburg matters immediately, because it always fails and cannot be reliably repaired.
  • Scale and grease buildup. How much of the pipe’s effective diameter has been lost, which tells you whether jetting will restore real capacity.
  • Location and depth. A transmitter in the camera head lets us mark the position and depth of any defect on the surface, which is what determines excavation scope and cost.

Why Home Buyers Should Always Do This

A standard home inspection does not include the sewer lateral, and the lateral is one of the few components that can produce a five figure surprise shortly after closing. In this region the risk is concentrated and predictable: an older Sacramento, Carmichael, or Fair Oaks home with clay pipe and mature trees, a Natomas property on settled ground, or any house of the right era for Orangeburg. A camera inspection during your contingency period costs a small fraction of what a replacement costs, and the footage gives you something concrete to negotiate with rather than a suspicion.

If you are selling, the same logic runs in reverse. Footage of a sound lateral removes a question a buyer’s inspector will otherwise raise, and footage of a documented repair is worth having on file.

When to Schedule One

  • Before closing on a home, during the inspection contingency
  • After any main line backup
  • When the same line clogs repeatedly, especially seasonally
  • Before authorizing any sewer excavation or replacement quote
  • When multiple fixtures drain slowly at once
  • When there is sewage odor in the yard or a soggy patch over the lateral run
  • Before a remodel or addition that will build over the sewer route
  • To document a completed repair for your records or for resale

Our Process

  • Access through a cleanout. We work through an existing cleanout wherever one exists. If the property has none, we will discuss access options before proceeding rather than surprising you.
  • Full length run. The camera runs from the access point to the connection at the main, not just the first twenty feet.
  • Locate and mark. Any defect is located and its depth marked at the surface.
  • Watch it with the technician. You see the footage live and we explain what each finding means and how urgent it is.
  • Footage and written summary. You keep the video and a plain summary of findings, which is what you need for a negotiation, an insurance claim, or a second opinion.

Buying a house?

Get the lateral filmed during your contingency period. It is the cheapest insurance in the transaction.

Why the Footage Belongs to You

An inspection whose findings you cannot review is not much better than an opinion. You keep the video and the written summary, which means you can get a second quote on a documented defect, negotiate a purchase with evidence, support an insurance claim, or simply confirm later that a repair was actually performed. We also encourage comparing pre repair and post repair footage on any work we do, because that is the standard we would want as a customer.

Why Inspection Before Excavation Saves Money

Sewer work is priced by the excavation, not the pipe. Digging in the wrong place, digging when lining would have worked, or replacing a full lateral when one joint had failed are all mistakes that cost multiples of an inspection. That is also why we recommend an inspection before accepting any contractor’s replacement quote, including ours. A quote for a full replacement with no footage behind it is a quote you should question.

There is a public health reason as well. A cracked or offset lateral leaks sewage into the surrounding soil continuously, and the EPA’s material on sanitary sewer overflows covers why those failures matter past the property line.

Sewer Camera Inspection FAQs

How long does an inspection take?

Usually under an hour when there is an accessible cleanout.

Do I get a copy of the video?

Yes, along with a written summary of findings. The footage is yours.

What if my house has no cleanout?

We will discuss options before proceeding, which may include accessing through a pulled toilet or installing a cleanout. Installing one is often worth it on its own, because it makes every future service call cheaper.

Is a camera inspection worth it when buying a home?

Yes, particularly for an older home with mature trees or a property on settled ground. Standard home inspections do not include the lateral, and it is one of the few components that can produce a very large post closing bill.

Can you tell how old the pipe is?

We can identify the material, which brackets the era and, more usefully, tells you the failure mode to expect. Clay, cast iron, Orangeburg, ABS, and PVC each behave differently.

Will the camera show a leak on the drain side?

It shows cracks, separations, offsets, and standing water, which is how drain side leaks present. Pressurized supply leaks need acoustic leak detection instead.

Do you charge for the inspection if I proceed with a repair?

Ask the office when you schedule and they will tell you exactly how it is handled for your situation.

Can you locate the line for a remodel or addition?

Yes. We can trace the route and depth and mark it at the surface, which is worth doing before you build over it.

Greg Rangel was on time, gave me a courtesy call before he arrived, and once he arrived, he called to find out the issues with the AC and got to work. Greg provided me with information about the AC unit after he found out what was happening, and he walked me through the process and the cost! He also changed the filter! I am now a member due to his outstanding customer service. Thank you, Greg, for your professionalism.

This company responded immediately to address an air conditioning problem for my elderly Mother during 100 degree heat. They responded in just a couple of hours. Greg Rangel was the technician and fixed the problem. He did explain the unit was older and would soon need replacement. He thoroughly explained this to me and offered a senior discount for my Mother and a lower priced unit. Job well done and thank you.

Truly professionals. Garrett showed up at scheduled time, answered all my questions and did a thorough inspection of my unit. Never felt pressured or like I was trying to be sold on anything. He explained everything along the way. An issue was found on some wiring outside, I was shown the issue and given the option to have it fixed. He showed me the completed work and the material used. I would highly recommend this locally owned and operated company.

Greg arrived late Saturday evening and worked out the problem. He explained the problem and eventually determined it began with the original set up of the thermostat, which was wrong for a heat pump. The problem was fixed, and great credit to Greg for being enthusiastic, professional and staying until it was done.
