Ductwork Services. Sealing, repair, design and replacement.

ENERGY STAR puts duct losses in a typical house at 20 to 30 percent of the air moving through the system. Across the Sacramento area and the foothills that duct work sits in an attic that passes 130 degrees in July, which is the worst possible place to be leaking. Sealing it is the cheapest performance you can buy.

Duct work design, repair, sealing and replacement across the Sacramento area and the Placer County foothills. Duct cleaning and duct repair are not the same service, and most homes here need the second one more. Rated 4.9 stars across 362 verified Google reviews.

Ductwork Services We Provide

Duct sealing. Mastic and metal tape at joints, boots, plenums and register connections. Not duct tape, which is the one product in the trade named after a job it is unfit for.

Duct repair. Crushed and kinked flexible runs, disconnected boots, separated joints, collapsed insulation and rodent damage.

Duct replacement. When a system has enough failures that patching it is money into a losing position.

Duct design and redesign. Where the layout itself is wrong, most often a house with too little return, one long undersized run to the far bedroom, or an addition that was teed into an existing trunk that could not spare the air.

New duct work for additions and conversions. Sized to the added load rather than borrowed from the rest of the house. Where the geometry does not allow it, we will say so and price a mini split instead.

Static pressure and airflow testing. We measure rather than estimate, because a system moving the wrong volume of air fails in ways that look like an equipment problem.

Duct cleaning. A separate service, and worth doing after construction, rodent activity or a smoke season. See air duct cleaning.

Why Ductwork Is the Cheapest Performance You Can Buy Here

ENERGY STAR puts the number plainly. In its guidance on duct sealing, it states that in a typical house about 20 to 30 percent of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts.

Read that against what it costs to buy efficiency the other way. Moving from an older air conditioner to a high efficiency replacement is a large purchase. Recovering a quarter of the air you are already paying to condition is not, and it is available on almost every house in this territory.

The reason it is available on almost every house here is where the duct work lives. The same ENERGY STAR guidance lists ducts located in an attic, crawlspace or garage as a warning sign, and recommends sealing in exactly those spaces. That is the standard arrangement across Sacramento area and foothill construction. The air handler and the trunk sit in an attic that runs well above 130 degrees in July, and every leak in that attic is either dumping conditioned air into a space you do not occupy or pulling superheated attic air into the supply.

The symptom list ENERGY STAR gives is worth reading against your own house: high summer and winter utility bills, rooms that are difficult to heat and cool, stuffy rooms that never feel comfortable, and tangled or kinked flexible ducts. Homeowners bring us three of those four as equipment complaints. Frequently the equipment is fine and the distribution is not.

So we at American Energy Home Pros test the duct work before quoting equipment on any older house. A high efficiency condenser attached to a duct system losing a quarter of its air is an expensive way to keep the same problem. See AC installation for how the two decisions fit together.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ductwork

Is duct cleaning the same as duct sealing?

No, and confusing them is common. Cleaning removes what is inside the duct. Sealing stops air escaping from it. Cleaning does not improve efficiency. Sealing does, measurably.

How much air am I actually losing?

ENERGY STAR puts the typical house at 20 to 30 percent of the air moving through the system. We test yours rather than assuming the average.

Can you seal duct work in an attic in summer?

Yes, and it is when the benefit is easiest to demonstrate. We schedule attic work early in the day for the technician sake as much as anything.

Should I seal or replace?

Sealing where the runs are sound and correctly sized. Replacing where the flex is crushed, the insulation has failed or the original design cannot deliver the air the far rooms need. We tell you which after we measure.

Will sealing the ducts fix my hot upstairs?

It is the first thing to rule out, and often enough it is the answer. Where it is not, the cause is normally insufficient return air or an undersized run, both of which are design problems rather than leakage.

Do I need this if my system is new?

Possibly, and it is worth checking. New equipment is frequently installed onto existing duct work, which means the losses came along with the upgrade.

Greg Rangel was on time, gave me a courtesy call before he arrived, and once he arrived, he called to find out the issues with the AC and got to work. Greg provided me with information about the AC unit after he found out what was happening, and he walked me through the process and the cost! He also changed the filter! I am now a member due to his outstanding customer service. Thank you, Greg, for your professionalism.

This company responded immediately to address an air conditioning problem for my elderly Mother during 100 degree heat. They responded in just a couple of hours. Greg Rangel was the technician and fixed the problem. He did explain the unit was older and would soon need replacement. He thoroughly explained this to me and offered a senior discount for my Mother and a lower priced unit. Job well done and thank you.

Truly professionals. Garrett showed up at scheduled time, answered all my questions and did a thorough inspection of my unit. Never felt pressured or like I was trying to be sold on anything. He explained everything along the way. An issue was found on some wiring outside, I was shown the issue and given the option to have it fixed. He showed me the completed work and the material used. I would highly recommend this locally owned and operated company.

Greg arrived late Saturday evening and worked out the problem. He explained the problem and eventually determined it began with the original set up of the thermostat, which was wrong for a heat pump. The problem was fixed, and great credit to Greg for being enthusiastic, professional and staying until it was done.
