Mini Split Systems. Ductless installation and repair since 1981.

A mini split is the best value in the trade for an open space, a converted garage, an ADU or one room that has never been comfortable. It is usually the wrong answer for a whole compartmented house, because every door you add is another head and another line set. We price both options so the comparison is on paper.

Ductless mini split installation, repair and maintenance across the Sacramento area and the Placer County foothills. A mini split is the right answer for some rooms and the wrong answer for a whole house, and we will tell you which one you have. Rated 4.9 stars across 362 verified Google reviews.

Mini Split Work We Do

New mini split installation. Single zone and multi zone systems, wall mounted, ceiling cassette or floor mounted heads, with the line set routed so it does not become the ugliest thing on the house.

Additions and converted space. A garage conversion, a bonus room over the garage, a sunroom or an ADU. Extending the existing duct system into new square footage frequently starves the rest of the house, and a mini split avoids that argument entirely.

The one room nobody can fix. Where a bedroom at the end of a long duct run has never been comfortable and rebalancing has not solved it, a dedicated head is often cheaper than redesigning the duct work. See air duct services.

Houses with no ducts at all. Older foothill homes on wall heaters or electric resistance heat. This is where ductless changes the operating cost most.

Mini split repair. Refrigerant leaks at the flare connections, condensate drainage, communication faults between the head and the outdoor unit, and boards. We work on what is installed rather than only what we sold.

Maintenance. Head filters and blower wheels, coil cleaning, drain line clearing and charge verification. Ductless equipment is not maintenance free, it is just quieter about needing it. See HVAC tune ups.

When Ductless Is the Right Choice and When It Is Not

Mini splits get sold as a universal upgrade. They are not, and being clear about that is more useful to you than a sales pitch.

Start with what the equipment actually does well. In its article on going ductless with heat pumps, the U.S. Department of Energy describes systems reaching 25 SEER in cooling and a Heating Seasonal Performance Factor of 10 in heating, and notes that cold climate models can deliver 100 percent of rated heating capacity at 5 degrees Fahrenheit and 87 percent at 4 degrees below zero. Nothing in a Sacramento or Placer County winter comes close to testing that. Capacity is not the limiting factor here.

Now the constraint the same article is honest about. Ductless is most appropriate for large open spaces, and multiple walled in rooms would require many separate heads. That is the whole decision in one sentence. An open plan great room, a converted garage, an ADU or a single stubborn bedroom are ideal. A 1990s four bedroom two story with hallways and doors is not, because covering it properly means five or six heads, five or six line sets and a price that has quietly passed what a well designed ducted system would have cost.

There is a second reason ductless looks better on paper than it sometimes is in practice. The advantage everyone quotes is that you avoid duct losses, which is real. But if your existing duct work is the problem, sealing it is usually the cheaper way to capture the same benefit, and it improves every room at once rather than the one with the new head in it. See duct work services.

So we at American Energy Home Pros scope mini splits by room count and layout first, not by efficiency rating. Where the space is open or isolated, ductless is frequently the best value in the trade. Where the house is compartmented, we will price the ducted option beside it and let the numbers make the case.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mini Splits

How many heads do I need?

One per space you want independently controlled, with the caveat that an open plan area counts as one space no matter how large it feels. Doors are what drive head count, not square footage.

Will a mini split heat the room in winter here?

Comfortably. The Department of Energy reports cold climate models holding full rated heating capacity at 5 degrees Fahrenheit, and Sacramento area winters do not get near that.

Is ductless cheaper than a ducted system?

For one or two zones, usually yes. For a whole compartmented house, usually no, because every zone needs its own head and line set. We price both so the comparison is on paper rather than in an opinion.

Do the indoor units need maintenance?

Yes. Head filters, blower wheels and drain lines all need attention, and a neglected head loses capacity and starts smelling before it starts failing.

Can you add a mini split to a garage conversion?

That is one of the best uses for one. Extending the existing duct work into new square footage often takes air away from the rest of the house, and a dedicated head sidesteps that.

Can I run one head and leave the rest of the house on the old system?

Yes, and it is a common and sensible arrangement. A supplemental head on the problem room, with the existing system carrying everything else.

Greg Rangel was on time, gave me a courtesy call before he arrived, and once he arrived, he called to find out the issues with the AC and got to work. Greg provided me with information about the AC unit after he found out what was happening, and he walked me through the process and the cost! He also changed the filter! I am now a member due to his outstanding customer service. Thank you, Greg, for your professionalism.

This company responded immediately to address an air conditioning problem for my elderly Mother during 100 degree heat. They responded in just a couple of hours. Greg Rangel was the technician and fixed the problem. He did explain the unit was older and would soon need replacement. He thoroughly explained this to me and offered a senior discount for my Mother and a lower priced unit. Job well done and thank you.

Truly professionals. Garrett showed up at scheduled time, answered all my questions and did a thorough inspection of my unit. Never felt pressured or like I was trying to be sold on anything. He explained everything along the way. An issue was found on some wiring outside, I was shown the issue and given the option to have it fixed. He showed me the completed work and the material used. I would highly recommend this locally owned and operated company.

Greg arrived late Saturday evening and worked out the problem. He explained the problem and eventually determined it began with the original set up of the thermostat, which was wrong for a heat pump. The problem was fixed, and great credit to Greg for being enthusiastic, professional and staying until it was done.
