Heat Pump Work We Do

Why the Heat Pump Numbers Work in This Climate
Start with the efficiency claim, from the source rather than from a brochure. In its article on heat pump savings, the U.S. Department of Energy states that modern air source heat pumps can reduce electricity use by 50 percent compared with furnaces and baseboard heaters, and puts typical savings at over 500 dollars a year depending on home size, local climate and efficiency. The same article notes that as of 2020 more than 17 million housing units already had them, and that heat pumps now account for more than half of all residential heating equipment sales in the United States.
Two of those figures matter more here than they do nationally.
The first is climate. The efficiency of a heat pump falls as outdoor temperature falls, which is the whole basis of the objection people raise. That objection is a real one in Minnesota. It is close to irrelevant between the Sacramento Valley and the Placer County foothills, where design winter temperatures sit comfortably inside the range where a modern unit holds capacity without leaning on auxiliary heat. The equipment is not being asked to do the hard version of its job here.
The second is fuel. A 50 percent reduction against a furnace is a national average across national fuel prices. On a foothill property running propane or electric resistance heat, the gap is wider, because you are replacing the most expensive heat available with the cheapest. Those are the conversions where the arithmetic is not close.
Now the part that gets left out. A heat pump moves a larger volume of air at a lower supply temperature than a furnace does. That makes it far less tolerant of undersized returns, leaking duct work and a system that was never balanced. A furnace can blow 130 degree air through bad duct work and still feel like it is heating. A heat pump in the same house feels weak, the homeowner turns on auxiliary heat, and the bill goes up rather than down. Almost every heat pump horror story we get called into is that sequence.

Will a heat pump keep the house warm in a Sacramento area winter?
Yes, without difficulty. Winter design temperatures here sit well inside the range where a modern heat pump holds its rated capacity. Cold weather performance is a real concern in cold climates and is not the limiting factor in this one.

How often does a heat pump need service?
