Shingle Springs, a former mining camp during the 1848 Gold Rush, later became a rail town along the oldest railroad in the west. Founded by a group of “48ers,” the settlement started as a crude miner’s camp and grew slowly. It had roadhouses, blacksmith shops, and a steam saw mill. The first post office opened in 1853 and the village remained a quiet place with little business from miners nearby. Buckeye Flat, located one mile east, became a bustling town while Shingle Springs stayed small until the Placerville & Sacramento Valley Railroad connected it to Sacramento in 1865. This led to sudden growth, making Shingle Springs a freighting and transportation center. However, the completion of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1865 diverted freight and passengers away from Shingle Springs, causing its decline. By 1883, only one resident remained in the town. Surrounding communities such as Buckeye Flat and Frenchtown also vanished when the mines were depleted. There is a tale of buried treasure called “The Pack Rat’s Treasure” in the area near the old Forty Mile House.
